FAQs Frequently Asked Questions Teen Book

What is Smile & Succeed for Teens about?
Smile & Succeed for Teens is a crash course in people skills to ensure teens succeed in school, work and life. It’s based on my first book, Smile: Sell More with Amazing Customer Service, with the addition of 50 informative illustrations with educational captions, and sections on how to interview and get a job, overcoming stress, and volunteering.

Why did you write it?
Many teachers and moms read my first book Smile: Sell More with Amazing Customer Service, and told me, “Kirt, you’ve got to get this book in the schools. Your book teaches the important people skills these kids aren’t learning.”

I decided to go a step further and write a book just for teens, and that's how Smile & Succeed for Teens was created.

Why is this information important for teens?
With people skills among the top attributes businesses expect when interviewing and hiring, and with employers everywhere saying young people lack these skills that are critical to be successful at work, there’s a huge disconnect. The parents that recognize this and take action to help their teens master great people skills will ensure their teens will thrive.

Will teens read it?
Yes, and they are reading it. Parents are telling me that their teens are reading it and that it was their teens idea! Teens love the book as it quickly improves their confidence and people skills. A mother told me that her teen daughter is “enamored with the book and won’t put it down.”

I wrote this as a crash course in people skills so kids would actually read it. I spent countless hours over a nine-month period meeting with teens and getting their input on what they wanted in the book and what they found valuable. After reading the manuscript they offered feedback. This is one of the reasons the book is so inspiring to teens. We met over and over again to ensure that they would read it.

I also met with parents, grandparents, and teachers. The book was also tested successfully in a classroom of 120 students in Flat Rock, Michigan. I even hired the teen editor at Penguin Books to go through it a couple of times, just to make sure it was teen-friendly.

Smile & Succeed for Teens is designed to be read cover-to-cover quickly and easily. Interesting facts, fun illustrations, famous quotations, real life examples, and how-to illustrations help teens master and apply the information.

What’s different or special about your book?
While there are many titles available on the topic of teens, Smile & Succeed for Teens has a unique advantage. It’s a quick and easy read – a crash course. This means: 1) teens will actually read it, and 2) they can start today.

Can you tell me about your first book?
My first book, Smile: Sell More With Amazing Customer Service, is a 60-minute crash course in customer service and sales. It’s the recipient of eight awards including the prestigious Mom’s Choice Gold Award, and Teachers’ Choice Award. Luxury department store Neiman Marcus uses Smile for training, as do other corporations. Some high schools use the book in their curriculum for DECA, VEI, the school store, and business and marketing classes.

Why is this topic of teens and texting important?
In her article, “The Flight From Conversation” in The New York Times, Sherry Turkle, a psychologist and professor at M.I.T., writes, “A 16-year-old boy who relies on texting for almost everything says almost wistfully, “Someday, someday, but certainly not now, I’d like to learn how to have a conversation.”” Smile & Succeed for Teens teaches teens how to have a conversation and gives them the words and confidence to do so.

Has Smile & Succeed for Teens won any awards?
Smile & Succeed for Teens is the winner of the Teachers' Choice Award for the Classroom, the Mom's Choice Gold Award honoring excellence in family friendly products, and the IPPY Gold Award recognizing excellence.
