We can all probably agree that social etiquette is severely lacking in some teens. The good news is teens will quickly and easily learn social etiquette when you give them the book Smile & Succeed for Teens: Must-Know People Skills for Today’s Wired World.
But in addition to giving them the book, what if you want to participate and help your grandchildren learn social etiquette? What can you do? The following tips will help you use Smile & Succeed for Teens with your grandchildren to help them master social etiquette:
- Take your grandchildren out to breakfast, lunch or dinner and have them practice saying “please”, “thank you”, and “you are welcome”, just like they learned in the book, with the staff. Ask them how it makes them feel when they are treated politely and when the staff uses these words when talking to them.
- Invite your grandchildren to go shopping with you. Ask them to watch, listen and report back to you afterwards about good social etiquette they witnessed from employees, and suggestions for improvement based on what they’ve learned in Smile & Succeed for Teens. Ask them how it made them feel when they were treated respectfully by staff with good social etiquette vs. how they felt when staff did not practice good social skills.
- Ask your children to pay attention to cell phone manners too. Have them report to you examples of good behavior, and suggestions for improvement from the advice in Smile & Succeed for Teens.
Teaching your grandchildren social etiquette can be fun and your grandchildren will enjoy these activities. With your help, your grandchildren with be social etiquette superstars!
